Government launches pilot program to develop Australia s digital sector

A federal government pilot program will consider new ways of designing training and qualifications for entry-level data analysts and to support the general workforce. Creating a workforce that can meet the changing needs of Australia’s digital economy will require fit-for-purpose qualifications, and the federal government is spending millions to improve the VET system to this end.  Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills and Small Business Stuart Robert said on Thursday the Digital Skills Organisation (DSO) pilot would work with employers, job seekers and training providers to develop the specialised training. “This pilot is doing the work to ensure those qualifications are fit-for-purpose so we can improve our skills pipeline and bring more Australians into our digital workforce,” Robert said.

STEM Equity Monitor results shows more needs to be done

Since 2018, the Australian government has used several strategies, tools and initiatives to improve the gender balance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The 2018-19 budget outlined $4.5 million to improve the participation of women and girls in STEM, with initiatives including the appointment of Australia’s inaugural Women in STEM Ambassador, Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, and establishing the STEM Equity Monitor, a national data report on girls and women in STEM.  In early May 2021, the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources released new STEM Equity Monitor data showing a small improvement in women’s participation in the STEM workforce.
