A bold Jet Stream ushers in extreme Russian heat
Jaclyn Whittal
Thursday, May 20th 2021, 6:00 am - Parts of Russia, even in the country s Arctic, are hotter than Europe this week. What s behind the extremes?
Temperatures upwards of 30°C aren’t beyond the pale in Europe in May –– but they re definitely out of place in parts of northern Russia that have been hitting that threshold this week, including on the doorstep of the Arctic. And it s largely thanks to a quirk of the Jet Stream.
A Jet Stream that brings extremes represents what we call a meridional pattern. An upper level wind stream that is more wavy in nature and has lots of ups and downs. These are better known as troughs and ridges.

Low headed to Atlantic Canada with drenching rains, intense winds

Tuesday, May 4th 2021, 9:25 pm - Atlantic Canada is being threatened by multiple systems over the next several days with soaking rains and howling wind gusts, thanks to an active storm track.
An active storm track will be developing this week for Atlantic Canada, bringing some heavy rainfall and blustery winds for the region. 30-50 mm of rain is possible for parts of the region, while other areas could see wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h. Looking beyond this system, forecasters are monitoring another low that could pack a punch on the weekend, but there is much uncertainty still regarding its track and strength. For details on the incoming bouts of stormy weather, read below.
An out-of-control rocket is hurtling toward Earth, but should we be worried? In partnership with
A large piece of space debris, possibly weighing several tonnes, is currently on an uncontrolled reentry phase (that’s space speak for “out of control”), and parts of it are expected to crash down to Earth over the next few weeks.
If that isn’t worrying enough, it is impossible to predict exactly where the pieces that don’t burn up in the atmosphere might land. Given the object’s orbit, the possible landing points are anywhere in a band of latitudes “a little farther north than New York, Madrid and Beijing and as far south as southern Chile and Wellington, New Zealand”.
