Back in February, Black cosplayers celebrated #28DaysOfBlackCosplay, an annual event created by Chaka Cumberbatch with a simple goal in mind: uplift and celebrate Black cosplayers during Black History Month and, ideally, get folks to showcase us in a positive light and not just when we faced harassment (or when we called them out for their lack of inclusivity,
especially if they’re a brand that preaches diversity).
A couple of days into March, a tweet was made by @maximilli lo to keep the Black excellence going. This time? In the fantasy realm.

While she would cosplay, on occasion, at local cons, Charanne Loves has been more active in the community since 2019. What started as dressing up for raves has blossomed into an ongoing passion for cosplay. How do you decide what you’re going to cosplay?
I’m the most chaotic cosplayer ever, I will wake up one day and be like, “I think a sexy Pickle Rick cosplay would be cool!”
Because 2020 has not been a kind year to, well, anyone, and many people lost motivation in doing the things that they love. For me, that thing was cosplay. It was hard to get excited about designing new looks and administering puppy dog eyes to get my wife to make something for me.
7 years ago I designed this Wonder Woman dress and my wife made it a couple months afterwards.

Seeing all of the events we had planned cancel and having to scramble to figure out how to make ends meet without them (since conventions were our primary source of income) pretty much snuffed out any desire to cosplay.
