Where I grew up in the Memphis suburbs was not the epitome of cool, so I didnât know what else to be except a goth kid. When I was 13, I wore lots of safety pins in my clothing. Now, the way I form friendships and meet people is so different, but then I would just get home from school and walk around the neighbourhood, finding other kids outside. Weâd go behind the storm drain and smoke cigarettes, hide from our parents and set stuff on fire. It was Tennessee! There wasnât a lot to do.

Julien Baker: It was such a wild time for me. There was a lot going on. I had just come out to my friends. I remember I had short hair before I came out to my parents and I was like, “How did you not know?” I had moved in with my dad, as well. My mom and I were in a fight about something non-related to my sexuality. I was being a vindictive, mean little kid. I was like, “Well, I’m gay,” and my mom immediately without skipping a beat retorts: “I know.” I thought I had been doing such a good job!

The singer and guitarist Julien Baker makes raw, ghostly rock music thatâs rooted in personal confession. But, unlike some artists operating in that mode, sheâs figured out how to turn fragility into a display of fortitude. Bakerâs songsâwhich explore themes of self-sabotage, atonement, and restitutionâare aching but tough. This stems, in part, from Bakerâs spiritual upbringing. She was raised in a devout Christian family near Memphis, Tennessee, and sang in church. When she came out as gay, at seventeen, she prepared herself for a swift denunciation, but her parents were compassionate. (Her father began scouring the Bible for passages about acceptance.) Itâs possible to hear the echoes of Christian hymnals in her first two albumsâideas of love and grace, mentions of God and rejoicing.
