OPINION | Five years and counting: Justice delayed is justice denied for listeriosis victims

Five years ago, the NICD concluded that Tiger Brands' Polokwane meat processing facility was the source of the biggest listeriosis outbreak in South Africa, yet no progress has been made to compensate victims, writes Father Stan Muyebe.

Some mining companies deny historic justice for sick and dying mine workers

The diseases were a result of prolonged exposure to excessive levels of silica dust while working on the gold mines. Nineteen of the respondent mining companies, which represent the largest gold producers in South Africa, reached an historic settlement in 2018. This provides for an uncapped amount of compensation for all qualifying mine workers and their dependents.

The last open session of the afternoon saw a presentation by Rev Sy Mamabolo and Mr Mosotho Moepya, the Chief Electoral Officer and the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa respectively, on the campaign for electoral reform. The focus was on the proposed Electoral Amendment Bill currently parliament for finalization on how it will impact on the work of the electoral commission, especially how viable it would be for the country’s electoral logistical system to be ready for elections.
