Protests against cutting down trees at the capital s Suhrawardy Udyan for the implementation of a mega project at the historic site continued throughout the day yesterday.
Demanding an immediate stop to the tree felling, the protesters said 10,000 trees at the park have to be planted there instead. Throughout the day, people from all walks of life including writers, poets, artistes, activists and members of various student organisations held rallies at the Udyan.
In the morning, youth organisation Green Voice demonstrated at the entrance to the park near TSC of Dhaka University.
Environmental activists yesterday put placards with the names of freedom fighters, including seven Bir Shreshthas, on trees at the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan in a symbolic bid to save them. Three environmental organisations Green Voice, Green Savers and Nongor Bangladesh jointly started the activities to save the trees at the historic park. The move came as some trees
Each tree has been named after one of the heroic freedom fighters, he said. We will place placards in the same way on all the trees at the Suhrawardy Udyan in different phases so that authorities cannot cut down the trees, said Sumon Shams, adding that they will put more placards containing names of freedom fighters today. We don t want any infrastructure at the Udyan through cutting of trees. As part of our efforts to save the trees, we have named each tree after one of the country s heroic children, said Ahsan Rony, founder of Green Savers. This is way we will guard the trees every day. We will fight hard to save the trees, he added.

Protesting an ongoing construction project at the capital s Suhrawardy Udyan, as part of which many old trees are being felled, green activists and students held a rally at Shahbagh yesterday.
They demanded a stop to tree felling and instead, planting 10,000 trees during the upcoming rainy season.

After facing backlash from different organisations and environmental activists, the public works department said it cut down trees at the Suhrawardy Udyan upon directives of the Liberation War affairs ministry for the implementation of a mega project at the historic site.
On Wednesday, the Liberation War affairs ministry in a statement claimed that there was a misunderstanding among people due to different media reports that published partial news regarding the project implementation.
