for their life, jim. shimon, it is just heartbreaking to see these images of these firefighters caring for these small children taken out of the building. thank you so much. shimon prokupecz. i want to bring in former fdny commissioner thomas vanesson. firefighters responded within three minutes of that first call, and yet that fire spread so quickly. what made this so devastating? i think you hit on it, everybody has said at the doors, that s the key. the building is supposed to have self-closing doors. were they closing? i don t know. it unt it make any sense to me that those stairwell doors were closing or you wouldn t have that much smoke throughout the building. duplex is unusual, created a problem for the firefighters not knowing where the fire was when they first got there and went to the third floor i m sure. second floor was also involved,
doors. and jake, also stairwell doors. some of those doors were left open which then allowed the smoke to go further up into the building, reaching every floor of this building all the way up to the 19th floor, jake. all right. shimon prokupecz, thank you. let s bring in new york city council member oswald feliz. he represents the area of the bronx where this tragic fire happened. councilman, thank you for joining us. two doors in question here. you heard shimon talking about the doors that are, by law, required to automatically close in hallways and the fire commissioner confirmed at least one of those malfunctioned. take a listen. the stairwell was very dangerous as the door was left open. some of the floors certainly on 15, the door was open from the stair to the hall. the 15th floor became quite untenable. we do recommend in high-rise
believe that that would be the case. can t tell you for sure. my gut is that it s not the building, it was the fact that all those doors had to be left open for that smoke to spread. if you re in that stairwell and that door from that fire floor or even the first floor with the firefighters coming up trying to get to the fire floor, that . potentially the stairwell doors were not being used properly or they weren t p functioning properly? i don t know. i can tell you if those doors are closed, then that smoke is not getting throughout the building. they obviously weren t, and it might have been people just trying to get out.
