Brigadier General Gerhard Kamffer.
The man who drove and successfully concluded the renaming of SA Army Reserve Force units and was also instrumental in adding value to this component of the national part-time military corps appears to be past his sell-by date.
A 17 February SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Bulletin, in addition to numerous promotions to the rank of brigadier general, also carried a number of transfers.
One of these was that Brigadier General Gerhard Kamffer, Director SA Army Reserves, would from 1 March be Director: Project Koba-Tlala. This ambitious project aims to provide part-time soldiers with skills ranging from agriculture to security. These will then enable them to earn income when not in uniform and at the same time boost local economies. The project is a Chief SANDF (General Solly Shoke) one and enjoys the support of Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

Lockdown duty patrols are now conducted under the Op Ligcolo banner.
At the height of South Africa’s COVID-19 induced lockdown, the landward force showed its mettle by deploying no less than 33, mostly infantry, companies in a 72 hour period.
This fact was used by SA Army Chief, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, to illustrate the important role of the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), its services and divisions in operations other than war (OOTW) when he addressed the Junior Command and Staff Duties class of 2021 at the Army College last week.
“As part of Operation Notlela the deployment saw soldiers and their commanders adhere to the mandate of developing and sustaining the ability to generate sufficient numbers of fully trained, multi-purpose, combat-ready forces to meet South Africa’s defence and security objectives,” Mbatha said.
