The debate began during a press conference on Friday, in which CTUSAB’s top brass accused the private sector of worker exploitation, in the face of increasing joblessness. According to the union, one of the major avenues for this exploitation is through the imposition of unusually short-term contracts, with the expectation that workers, desperate for employment, will accept, according to the Congress.

The BWU seceded CTUSAB in 2013, with then general secretary Sir Roy Trotman outlining several reasons why the decision was made, one notably being what he said was a move to prevent the BWU from representing Barbados at the International Labour Organisation session in Geneva, Switzerland. Moore said she did not want to rehash the “ugly stuff” of the past but acknowledged unions were at their strongest as one.
