this week looking at the gaps in our background check system and background checks is the one thing it seems like everybody can agree on that we continue to have trouble getting passed. talk about the findings of those reports. it is important that we are talking about this today but it is important to note that only 1% of people killed by homicides are killed in mass shootings. the largest mass shooting in american history was at virginia tech and that shooter got his gun and he would have been a prohibited purchaser but his mental health record was not in the system. what our organization has done is taen fbi data and told the states especially states that are doing a very poor job of it, when you don t submit your records into the mental health national criminal background check system you are leaving fatal gaps and every missile record is a tragedy waiting to happen. that wasn t the case with this young man but we know that there s more that we can do to keep guns out of danger
half of the second term. many of the people, a few are still holding on, we ve seen a lot of turnover and president obama has gone with people he is comfortable with, typically i don t want to say friends and family but loyal advisers to him. julian castro is an interesting pick, it is hud, not state justice, defense, this sort of big cabinet position but it s still a cabinet job. staen i do think it s sort of forward looking pick that s about the democratic party and about julian castro. he s the best player or one of the best players on a team that s not good right now and not going to get better for fourp or eight years. that s a reality for democrats in texas. the demographics of the state aren t there yet. a guy like julian castro who has a lot of ability, he has nowhere else to go. why would he take hud?
immediate neighbors not out of strength, but out of weakness. president obama had some extremely barbed meants today dismissing russia as a threat to the united states and throwing some shade at russia for its annexation of crimea. we have considerable influence on our neighbors. we generally don t need to invade them in order to have a strong cooperative relationship with them. it was a pretty sweet burn. all things considered. just so we re all clear about the history of this country by which i mean the united states, the term generally in the statement we generally we don t invade our neighbors is doing a lot of work. of course, just over the last, say, ten years, there were the nonneighbor countries we innovated and bombs like iraq, after staen a avr stan, and libya. and places we ve sent drones and missiles like yemen and somalia and pakistan. but back to our neighbors. the united states has not actually invaded anyone we could plausibly call a neighbor in 20
