Lahaina Intermediate School faculty and staff cheered and waved signs as they welcomed approximately 400 students back to their West Maui campus for the first time this academic year.
DOE officials said the students started their day with grade-level orientation assemblies followed by a rotating class schedule to meet all of their teachers.
NOVI The city of Novi, in partnership with the Polynesian Arts Advocacy Council of Michigan, held the “Luau for Lahaina” Aug. 26 at the Novi Civic Center to benefit those affected by the wildfires in Maui.
The DOE is reopening most Maui schools this week, welcoming employee teams on Monday and students on Wednesday.
King Kekaulike High, Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary, Lahaina Intermediate and Lahainaluna High remain closed and will reopen when it is safe to return. King Kamehameha III Elementary on Front Street was damaged beyond repair.
Students and families who were displaced by the fires and are living outside of Lahaina, they are encouraged to enroll in the neighborhood school where they are staying, even if the housing situation is temporary.
Fern Elementary School Principal Glen Miyasato has been named Hawaii’s 2023 National Distinguished Principal by the Hawaii Elementary & Middle School Administrators Association.
