Dave Mosier/Van Wert independent DAVE MOSIER/ independent editor Van Wert City Council heard better than expected financial news from City Auditor Martha Balyeat and discussed some changes in zoning for an area of the downtown during its meeting on Monday. The auditor noted that the city has taken in $27,000 more so far this year than has been spent, which is better than expected. “We’re really not in as bad of shape as what I thought we might be,” Balyeat said during her report to Council.

Council discusses DORA district, hears economic report

DAVE independent editor Van Wert City Council learned about a new program that could bring more foot traffic to the downtown area, while also hearing about some economic development positives during its meeting Monday evening. This map shows the proposed DORA (Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area) district. MSVW map First off, Main Street Van Wert Executive Director Mitch Price made a presentation on the DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) program planned for the downtown area. The state program consists of a district within the downtown area where A and D alcohol permit holders can sell alcohol, by the cup, to patrons, who would be able to walk or dine within the boundaries set up by the program. DORA was first created in 2017 for communities with populations of fewer than 35,000 people and a maximum district size of 150 acres.

Heartland Patriots to have March meeting

VW independent/submitted information The Van Wert Heartland Patriots will hold their March meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 551 Center St. in Van Wert. The featured speaker for the evening will be Van Wert Area Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Stacy Adam, who will provide an overview of the organization, which works with existing businesses to help them meet their needs through workforce development, financing tools, and grant programs. The VWAEDC also includes the Revolving Loan Fund, Van Wert Land Revitalization Corporation (land bank), PACE financing, the Business Advisory Council, Community Development Block Grants, and the CHIP program.
