Watch: Apple AirTags Hacked By Security Researcher

by Tyler Durden Wednesday, May 12, 2021 - 08:40 PM The Apple AirTag hasn t even been out for two weeks, and someone has already hacked into the new tracking device.  9to5Mac reports that security researcher  Stack Smashing  was able to break into the microcontroller of the AirTag and modify elements of the item tracker software. A microcontroller is an integrated circuit (IC) used for controlling devices usually via a microprocessing unit, memory, and other peripherals. According to AllAboutCircuits, these devices are optimized for embedded applications that require both processing functionality and agile, responsive interaction with digital, analog, or electromechanical components. In a series of posts, Stack Smashing s Twitter account demonstrated that after bricking 2 AirTags, the researcher was able to break into the microcontroller of the AirTag!

Apple AirTag tracker is HACKED by security researchers just days after being released

Apple s newly released tracker device has already been hacked by an IT security researcher, just days after its release. German security researcher Stack Smashing tweeted on May 8, just one week after the device went on sale, that they managed to break into the microcontroller of the AirTag. The IT researcher added that he was able to dump the firmware and some important areas, essentially modifying the device s tracking software. And while the standard AirTag opens Apple s Find My website, the hacked one diverted users to a non-related URL. It opens the risk that hacked AirTags could be used for phishing scams, 9to5Mac reports.

Apple AirTag can be hacked but it s not as bad as it sounds

JC Torres - May 9, 2021, 9:26pm CDT Given its hard stance on security and privacy, it’s really no surprise that Apple’s latest accessories are being put under a microscope, both technically and even legally by the likes of Tile. The AirTag trackers, after all, are in a prime position to become spying tools and some hackers and security researchers seem to want to test whether that will indeed be the case. Based on a revelation over the weekend, the AirTag could indeed be reprogrammed but the process and the end result might not yet be worth the worry. Like any electronic device, especially “smart” ones, the Apple AirTag has a microcontroller that orchestrates its activities. Those range from controlling battery and Bluetooth to determining what gets sent via its NFC radio. And just like any other computer, that microcontroller might be vulnerable to hacking, something that German security researcher and YouTube content creator Stack Smashing proved.

Someone managed to jailbreak an AirTag already

Someone has been able to hack an AirTag to give them control over its behavior. A hacker has been able to have an AirTag direct users to their own website via Lost Mode. Little more than a week after going on sale, Apple s AirTag item track has already been jailbroken. First spotted by The 8-Bit. German researcher stacksmashing has been able to hack their way into an AirTag s software, changing how it behaves when put into Lost Mode. German security researcher and YouTube content creator that goes by the name Stack Smashing tweeted today that they were successful in breaking into the microcontroller of the AirTag. They were then able to re-flash the microcontroller that enabled them to modify elements of AirTag s software.
