New Jersey police officers would be able to watch their body camera footage before filing their initial reports under a controversial bill lawmakers sent to Gov. Phil Murphy on Thursday.
Rushed through the legislative process in just two weeks, the proposal sparked debate about whether reviewing the recordings would aid or alter officers’ memories.
The Assembly passed the measure in a 71-1 vote.
The Senate, meanwhile, approved the bill by a vote of 31-4, but tacked on a late amendment that allows a person who is subject of a police report to also review the video if the officer watches it.
