MANGALURU: At a time when groundwater continues to be overexploited in several parts of India, kattas, the traditional temporary check dams, have played an important role in Santyar of Aryapu village in Puttur in maintaining the water table.
In December every year, Dr AP Radhakrishna, head of the department, physics, St Philomena’s College, Puttur, who is also an agriculturist, and his three cousin brothers who are progressive farmers, build four temporary check dams across streams in Santyar. They have been doing this regularly since the past fifty years as a result of which nearly 100 acres of land has benefited.
