Almost the whole town near Dublin has agreed to withhold phones from their children, until at least age 12, meaning that the vast majority of the area s 3,500 primary school pupils are phone-free.
The community-led initiative which had a huge impact on smartphone use when it was first introduced in primary schools in Greystones and Delgany is now being considered for national schools in the Enniskerry and Curtlestown areas.
The principal of St Patrick’s National School in Greystones, Rachel Harper, said the new government guidelines on smartphone use in primary schools, which were informed by the It Takes a Village campaign, is an example of how a “community-led initiative can influence positive public change”.
