Towards the end of the decades-long Sri Lankan civil war, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had effectively formed a functioning military state, with its own infrastructure, in the northern Tamil majority region of the island. And the town of Kilinochchi was its capital.
The LTTE had been fighting against the Sri Lankan government – which serves the interests of the Sinhalese majority – in an attempt to see the formation of an independent state, known as Tamil Eelam. And peace process negotiations had been taking place over 2002 to 2006.
Canadian MP for Scarborough-Rouge Park, Canada, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Gary Anandasangaree, expressed a message of solidarity for Tamil protesters walking for Justice from Pottuvil to Polikandi. Noting in his message that “their purpose is to seek accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide against the Tamil people by the Sri Lankan state”.
This statement comes as Families of the Disappeared in Jaffna and Vavuniya defied court bans against this protest and launched hunger strikes demanding to know what happened to their loved ones. These protests are on Sri Lanka’s Independence Day which protesters have referred to as a “black day”.Related Articles:
