Niroshan Wijekoon - first Sri Lankan to win a World Cup match Daily News (via HT Media Ltd.) Pathmasiri Niroshan Bandara Wijekoon created history as the first badminton player to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. He was born in Bandarawela on February 10, 1964 and was educated at St. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela, Ananda College, Colombo and later went on to captain Royal College, Colombo. Wijekoon made his debut in Sri Lankan National Badminton Championships in 1975 as an 11-year-old and went on to win 28 titles including nine Singles, 12 Doubles and seven Mixed Doubles. Wijekoon started playing badminton at St. Thomas’ College from his young age and came under the guidance of some top coaches of the calibre of Ananda Alahakoon, A.R L. Wijesekera and L. R. Panchali Janodya Adikari, a grade eleven student of Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy is an outstanding badminton player who started playing badminton at the tender age of six years under the coaching of R.S.Dahanayake. At first she studied at Gothami Vidyalaya,Kandy from Grade One onwards and in the Year 2017 she was admitted to Mahamaya Girls School to pursue higher studies as well as badminton her pet sport. At Mahamaya Girls College she was coached by R.L.Lasantha, a reputed badminton coach. In June 2018 ,Panchali was selected by Sri Lanka Badminton Association to follow a training course in badminton at Prakash Padukone Academy, Bangalore for three weeks for the under 15 age category. After this training course she did extremely well to win the Under 15 Singles title at the Junior Nationals and to win the National Badminton Tournament held at Lumbini Vidyalaya and Royal College Sports
