so the military decided to brief the president about this on wednesday of last week. and the president s initial instinct was to shoot it down. however the military s advice was to not do so until it was over water. not only because of the risk the balloon could pose to civilians on the ground and over water would give the u.s. government higher chances of being able to recover that pay load completely in tack. and the u.s. wants to see what is inside in the balloon and what the chinese government has in terms of surveillance equipment and intelligence-gathering capabilities. so around noon yesterday, on saturday, the secretary of defense lloyd austin did give the final approval and by president biden to move forward with the operation. and then we saw the two advanced fighter jets, f-22 fighter jets take off from langley air force base in virginia and shoot down the balloon using one missile. and of course we all saw the explosion there.
