Russia gives Google 24 hours to delete illegal content or be throttled May 24, 2021 21:56 EDT with 4 comments
Russia s internet commission Roskomnadzor on Monday gave Google 24 hours to delete banned and illegal content. It has warned that not doing so would lead to fines and throttling of Google services in the country. The fines would range from 800,000 rubles to 4 million rubles and can go up to 10% of the company s total annual turnover. It has also told Google to unblock a YouTube video posted by the state-run Sputnik France outlet.
The Russian internet watchdog says Google has failed to remove 20-30% of links to content that is banned in Russia including 26,000 instances of illegal content which the search giant has been notified of.

A court fined Google for failing to remove content banned by the Russian authorities as Moscow’s 24-hour ultimatum to comply or have its services slowed down passed on Tuesday.
Russia’s internet regulator Roskomnadzor threatened to slow down Google services if the internet giant did not comply with requests to delete an estimated 5,000 links. Roskomnadzor has accused Google of leaving up content promoting drug use and featuring child pornography, as well as content that Russia says incites minors to attend unauthorized protests.
On Tuesday, the Tagansky district’s magistrate court in Moscow handed down three rulings fining Google a total of 6 million rubles ($82,000), Russia’s RBC news website reported.
