As spring temperatures return across the state, so does the demand for outdoor recreation. Wisconsin residents set visitation records last year when they flocked to state parks as COVID-19 restrictions prevented people from gathering indoors. While vaccinations continue, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials anticipate similar visitation numbers at popular state parks. To beat the crowds, we talked to DNR State Natural Areas Director Thomas Meyer to find some hidden gems across the state. Here’s a closer look at some of the properties he recommended. Skunk and Foster Lakes State Natural Area Skunk and Foster Lakes State Natural Area in Waupaca County is home to five glacial pothole lakes surrounded by a forest of paper birch, white pine, red maple, elm, and white and red oak.
