Springville considers statement of support for Ashville jail in work session

By Terry Schrimscher SPRINGVILLE Mayor Dave Thomas discussed several pending issues with the Springville City Council during a work session at City Hall on Monday, Feb. 22, including a possible resolution in support of the jail in the neighboring city of Ashville. The proposed resolution would mirror statements from Ashville and other St. Clair County communities in response to speculation about the potential closure of the jail facility in Ashville. “It’s going to affect departments on the I-59 corridor. Argo, Springville, Ashville and Steele,” said Springville Police Chief Wayne Walton. “If Steele has to take someone to Pell City, they are gone for two hours. If we have to take someone, we’re looking at an hour and a half,” he said.

Springville delays consideration of new budget until February

By Terry Schrimscher SPRINGVILLE The Springville City Council met for its final regular monthly meeting on Monday night, January 25 with a work session prior to the meeting. Most of the work session was dedicated to discussion of the proposed city budget. Springville is currently operating off the previous year’s budget numbers until the new budget is passed. After a lengthy discussion about revenue projections and payroll estimates for new positions outlined in the proposal, the council removed the discussion of the budget from the regular meeting agenda and will consider it further at the February 1 meeting. “I didn’t anticipate the push back on the budget,” said Mayor Dave Thomas, “we’ll get together, get our pencils sharpened and get something working.”

Springville approves sales tax holiday for storm preparedness

By Terry Schrimscher SPRINGVILLE The City of Springville will join cities around Alabama in observance of the state’s Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday during the last weekend of February 2021. The sales tax exemption will apply to specific items commonly needed during severe weather. The Springville City Council approved a resolution to participate in the sales tax holiday at the regular council meeting on Monday night, January 4. “Not only during these most difficult days but anytime taxpayers can keep more of their hard-earned income is appreciated,” said Springville Mayor Dave Thomas. The tax holiday is part of an ongoing statewide initiative that began in 2012 exempting many items, priced under $60, from state sales and usage taxes. Local governments can choose to participate, or not, by eliminating local sales taxes during those days. Springville will not charge a local or state sales tax for approved purchases.

Springville passes ordinance prohibiting big trucks on roadway near interstate

By Terry Schrimscher SPRINGVILLE The Springville City Council held a special session to pass an ordinance during the Monday, Dec. 14, 2020 work session to limit certain traffic on Purple Heart Boulevard, the roadway off Highway 174, near the BP station at Interstate 59. The ordinance, requested by council member Herbert Toles, was in response to a recent influx of dangerous traffic flowing into nearby neighborhoods. “Big trucks have been coming through and getting up on the sidewalks and tearing down signs,” said Toles. “It’s a mess.” Councilman Toles represents District 1 which includes the neighborhood most affected by the large trucks. The new ordinance was prompted by the recent increase in traffic through the neighborhood and recent incidences where large trucks have gotten onto the narrow roads and have been unable to turn around. One recent event required considerable city resources to remedy.
