The Columbus Blue Jackets have conducted multiple interviews with both Gerard Gallant and Rick Tocchet as they look for John Tortorella’s replacement as head coach, but the job may actually be going to someone they are much more familiar with. Brad Larsen, an assistant with the Blue Jackets since 2014-15, before Tortorella even arrived in Columbus, is considered the front-runner for the job, according to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic. Larsen has also interviewed twice for the job.
Even before he joined the Blue Jackets bench, Larsen was part of the Columbus organization. He served as an assistant and then head coach of the Springfield Falcons almost immediately after his playing career ended. His final season on the ice was as captain of the Portland Pirates, playing alongside current NHL talents like Tyler Ennis, Paul Byron, and even current Blue Jacket N

DANVERS, MA When Billy McSheffrey played ice hockey and baseball at Fermi High School in the early 2000s, the team nickname was the Falcons. A decade after his graduation in 2005, he went to work as strength and conditioning coach of the Springfield Falcons, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL s Arizona Coyotes.
Since Fermi s consolidation with Enfield High School in 2016, the local teams are now known as the Eagles. Coincidentally, McSheffrey s current career stop finds him working with a different group of Eagles, as strength and conditioning coordinator at St. John s Preparatory School, about 20 miles from Boston.
The Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, begin their season on February 5. Playing 30 games for the 2021 season against four different opponents, the IceHogs are coming together as a very young team and will possibly be focusing on development more this season than the wins and losses.
