It has been nine months since city leaders enacted an ordinance in Springfield requiring adults to wear face coverings in most indoor public settings to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
There s a potential $100 fine associated with violating the ordinance, but law enforcement initially took an educational approach in the first several months under the ordinance and gave people warnings if they were caught breaking the law.
Then in December, with new COVID-19 cases spiking, Springfield police warned they would start writing tickets at the behest of City Manager Jason Gage and others.
Now that many cities across the state are lifting their mask mandates, and there s an end in sight for Springfield s order, the News-Leader checked in with local law enforcement to see how many people had been ticketed.
