Talisman: Eyesore Glasgow pub finally to be demolished as locals declare victory in long-running saga

Demolition crews arrived on the site ahead of the start of work next week AN eyesore pub in Springburn will finally be demolished after its owner agreed to call last orders on the site.  Work will begin tomorrow to tear down the Talisman following years of wrangling and mounting pressure from the local community to take action.  The Balgrayhill Road building, described as a visual and environmental blight , has been derelict for more than two decades and the move comes shortly after council officers agreed to explore a compulsory purchase order on the land.  Councillors have hailed the demolition work, expected to last until the end of March, as a win for the people of Springburn .

Volunteers across North Glasgow recognised for efforts during pandemic

VOLUNTEERS from across Springburn have been thanked for their “tireless efforts” throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Springburn Community Council, Springburn Parish Church and the Salvation Army have all been recognised in the House of Commons. A motion, submitted by Anne McLaughlin MP, congratulates their “tremendous” efforts to support the community since lockdown began back in March. The organisations have been working around the clock to provide whatever support is required by vulnerable people. Thousands of food packages have been delivered to people in need alongside toiletries, prescription medicine, sanitary products and other essential items. Helen Carroll, chair of Springburn Community Council, said: “There are so many local volunteers that quietly get on with the work that’s needing done behind the scenes.

Talisman owner wants to purchase land surrounding derelict pub

Glasgow City Council has begun preparing for a compulsory purchase order after years of stalled negotiations. Officers hope a voluntarily sale for the Balgrayhill Road site can still progress and are open to meeting with the owner, Ameen Mirza, who has secured a demolition order for the eyesore building. But, in a letter to councillors, seen by the Glasgow Times, and sent on behalf of Mr Mirza, his representative confirms an interest in “acquiring the adjoining land” owned by the council. “Our client is interested in purchasing the neighbouring land to the immediate south and west of their demise from GCC,” the letter states.
