North Adams Council Rejects Housing Project Bid for Sullivan School

This is the second bid on the vacant 12-acre property the council has turned down, the first being a plan for an advanced manufacturing school a year ago.    Xenolith Partners LLC of Bedford, N.Y., and SanoRubin Construction Services LLC of Albany, N.Y., had offered $10,000, well below the assessed value of $2,333,350, and requested a 30-year tax incentive that set the tax bill on each unit and capped increases to 2 percent annually.    It was the only bid on the property, which has been put out for requests for proposals nine times now. Approval would have given Mayor Thomas Bernard authority to negotiate terms with the developers.

Drury High School Beneficiary of Trust, Memorial Gift

The School Committee on Tuesday accepted a gift of $1,885 in memory of former Drury High School teacher Francis Merrigan, who died Nov. 2, and a $40,000 trust from estate of John and Joyce Brooks.   In their letter to the committee, Merrigan s family said their father would be happy to see the funds donated in his memory benefit the high school s cinema and screenwriting course, which could use some upgraded film production technology.   When Dad spoke of his time teaching, some of his favorite memories were of a filmmaking class that he was able to teach as a side project. In our family, we ve all had the experience of running into his former students and hearing their fond memories of a particular movie project that involved shooting scenes around North Adams and that was one of their most vivid memories of high school. In whatever small way, if these funds can help other students work on projects that help bring their learning to life, we would be thrilled, wrote

NAPS Gets Grant Purchase Mask & Gloves & Drury Receives Gifts

North Adams Public Schools has purchased thousands of masks and gloves with a $7,000 grant from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association. The association, which is the city s insurance provider, gave North Adams a risk management grant last fall to cover COVID-19-related costs and to help prevent losses because of property damage. Schools Business Administrator Carrie Burnett announced the grant at a school committee meeting Tuesday. Burnett told The Eagle that $5,000 went toward a bulk purchase of personal protective equipment, which included 4,000 child- and adult-size masks, 15 cases of N95 masks and 10,000 gloves of various sizes. The remainder of the grant went to a thermographic camera that the district will use to increase energy efficiency by finding problem spots in old school buildings.

Review: Museum Town shows how art changed a mill town but offers little depth

Print If you want to make a documentary about a museum, MASS MoCA, the contemporary arts center in North Adams, Mass., is a pretty good bet in terms of subject matter. The museum occupies a labyrinthine old mill complex that supplied fabrics to the Union Army during the Civil War and was transformed into an electronics plant in the 20th century. When the Sprague Electric Co. abandoned the town in the 1980s, Thomas Krens, then the director of the nearby Williams College Museum of Art, with his colleague Joseph Thompson, plotted to transform the behemoth 26-building site into a contemporary arts center called MASS MoCA.
