Christchurch schools encouraged to join Run to Remember through new initiative

Joseph Johnson/Stuff Halswell School principal Stuart Cameron and students Ashton Ingram, 11, Lara Lee, 12, and Nathan Allan, 12, are all excited to be taking part in this year’s Run to Remember on Sunday, February 21. Helping Christchurch’s youth become more active is the main goal of a new Run to Remember offer for schools. Organisers hope the initiative will attract record numbers to the event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Canterbury earthquakes as well as the lives lost in the March 15 attacks. Halswell School is the first school to offer its students, parents and staff discounted entry rates for the 10-kilometre walk and run though the Port Hills on February 21, thanks to Sport Canterbury and Athletics Canterbury.

Master Plan proposes to future proof Timaru s Aorangi Park sports hub

JOHN BISSET/Stuff A proposed master plan for Aorangi Park looks to “future proof” the sports grounds for 25 years. A major overhaul of the Aorangi Park sports hub has been proposed in order to “future proof” the Timaru facility for the next 25 years. An updated Aorangi Park Master Plan, to be discussed by Timaru District Council on Tuesday, identifies a number of issues and proposes a staged approach to any future development. Challenges listed include capacity issues, the desire of Netball South Canterbury to deliver all senior competition indoors, the required replacement of the South Canterbury Hockey turf, tensions between hosting of large events and scheduled indoor sports competitions and the ongoing issue of having enough green space.

Christchurch woman runs through health struggles to conquer Run to Remember

CHRIS SKELTON Ally Swann has overcome major health challenges over the years, and is determined to complete her third consecutive Run to Remember. Ally Swann is determined that health complications won’t keep her from completing her third consecutive The Press Run To Remember next month. The 36-year-old first took part in the event in 2019 with her golden retriever Minnie, and improved on her time the following year despite enduring long-standing struggles with liver and bowel disease. This year she comes prepared with a game plan and a goal – to once again beat her previous time in the 10-kilometre walk and run though the Port Hills on February 21, created to honour the lives lost in the Canterbury earthquakes.
