Spokane’s Catalyst Building at the south end of the University District received a visit Tuesday from an eager and interested state official, Washington Governor Jay Inslee.
The building is known for its main building material, cross-laminated timber, and its energy efficiency.
Jay Inslee was once a presidential candidate whose main issue was climate change.
So when he came to Spokane and toured a building and neighborhood touted for so-called “smart energy” and “smart buildings”, he was fully engaged. Before his tour, Inslee and his wife Trudi received an orientation from Ash Awad, the president and chief market officer for the Seattle design firm McKinstry, one of the partners in the Catalyst Building.
MOSCOW â Two University of Idaho College of Engineering teams earned a total of $11,000 during the 16th annual Northwest Entrepreneur Competition to launch sustainability and home gym business startups in Idaho.
Biological engineering senior Addie White, of Boise, earned $10,000 for her first-place win in the Traditional Business category for her Campus Can Crushers, a durable, lever-action aluminum can crusher that helped U of I recycle 1.3 tons of aluminum during a campus-wide competition this spring.
Campus Can Crushers are customizable to incorporate university and business logos. White intends to market Campus Can Crushers to universities to enhance their recycling programs and to help universities meet sustainability goals. Whiteâs plan includes manufacturing the devices in a barrel-style for use on university campuses and at local businesses, as well as a wall-hanging crusher for home use.

Contest organizers invite public to pitch presentations Spokane’s University District and North Idaho College are collaborating to host the final round of the 16th annual Northwest Entrepreneur Competition online Wednesday, April 15. Ryan Arnold, director of regional entrepreneurship strategy at North Idaho College, says 35 high school and undergraduate student teams from Washington and Idaho initially entered the competition. In the final round, nine teams across three categories will compete for cash prizes of up to $10,000. Categories include the traditional business category, which is for locally-focused ideas such as products, services, or restaurants; the technology business category, sponsored by Avista Corp., for products and software that involve intellectual property; and the Perkins Coie open business category, in which student team members may choose additional team members who are graduate students, faculty, or community members.

SPOKANE, Wash. A multifamily development with 298 units is coming to Spokane s University District.
Sagamore Spokane LLC, a local development company, announced on Thursday that the City of Spokane approved its application for building permits for the first phase of The District, according to a press release from the University District. The development is located on a 13.6-acre parcel of land comprised of ten lots and surrounded by the Spokane River to the north, East Martin Luther King Jr. Way to the south, the Ben Burr trail alongside the river to the north, and bisected by the Hamilton Street Bridge.
