SPOKANE, Wash. The Spokane City Council on Monday adopted a resolution to create a strategy to address the city’s affordable housing troubles.
This comes as Spokane’s housing prices and supplies skyrocket.
“This resolution is a starting point for Council to debate and shape a strategy to address housing and homelessness going forward,” said Councilwoman Lori Kinnear. “This provides the Mayor with a clear list of priority actions that have Council support with the assurance that they would be funded.”
The resolution aims to increase housing availability, accessibility, information sharing and strategies to set goals. It also contains a 13-point addendum for the ‘Smart Growth Initiative,’ which includes monitoring government-sponsored homelessness programs and updates from the Spokane Regional Continuum of Care.
Who was Whist-alks?
Whist-alks, whose name means walks in a dress,” was the wife of Qualchan, a Yakama sub-chief who was ordered hanged by Col. George Wright in 1858. According to historical reports, Whist-alks attempted to resist her and Qualchan s capture.
Wright led a violent campaign to suppress Native American resistance to the spread of white settlers in the mid-19th century.
Fort George Wright Drive is now Whistalks Way.
The name change, an acknowledgment of the brutality imposed on Native American tribes in Spokane by Col. George Wright and the United States government, was approved unanimously by the Spokane City Council on Monday.
The future is undoubtedly bright for the Spokane Public Library, but the new year will bring continued uncertainty.
The pandemic will continue to limit the library’s services for the foreseeable future, but officials also expect to complete the renovation of the Shadle Branch and construction of The Hive, a new building on E. Sprague and S. Haven, in 2021.
“We’re excited about that for sure, but it is certainly a challenge to navigate through the pandemic at the same time as navigating through the construction and opening of these facilities,” Library Director Andrew Chanse told The Spokesman-Review Wednesday.
If the mayor’s proposed 2021 budget is approved by the Spokane City Council on Monday, the Library Fund would be set at $10.7 million, down from the $10.8 million in 2020.
