speak to many of them are angry and you ve drawn the largest crowds that we ve seen in this political season, 20,000 this week in boston. you ve also said you will endorse the nominee if it is not you. are those people that are angry going to accept you supporting someone if it s not you? would you be, would they turn on you and say you delivered them, sold them out? that s a fair question and then the answer is maybe. this is what i said, as you know i m the longest serving independent in the history of the united states congress and before i made the decision of whether or not to run it was a difficult decision. had to decide do i run as an end pebt? a lot of my supporters said bernie don t cut into the democratic party, run as an independent. i concluded the last thing in the world that i wanted to do was to play a spoiler role. get 5% of the vote, 10%, help elect some right wing republican extremist to be president of the united states, that s what i
policy chops on anything. he said i don t know. he punted on the answer. if republicans and really journalists dig down on pollicy issues, he will show he doesn t have answers. then it doesn t matter if he runs as a third party candidate. van, third party candidates they played the spoiler role. ralph nader to drop a name. what do you do about this threat? what do you do if he becomes a third party candidate. what s interesting is that you have a lot of discontent in the country. but the democrats, the party is healthy enough to absorb that. our renegade is bernie sanders. he had to come inside to be relevant. the republican party is in such disarray they have so many candidates so many problems that somebody could go outside. this party does not seem to be able to contain and manage.
there, you would have never heard of bill clinton. in my opinion, bush would have gotten almost a hundred percent of those votes. now, i actually spoke to bill clinton once and said no, no, we re split 50/50. no way. had ross perot not run, you would have never heard of bill clinton. i don t know if the clintons would agree with that statement. but donald trump is right. he s probably not going to run as a third party kand cat. unless he wants the kind of publicity that he s been getting over the last few weeks. i think we still would have heard bill clinton. but that s the serious thing that trump says. he thinks he would elect the democrats if he elects a third party candidate. he would play a spoiler role. but this is an opportunity for them, definitely.
but why would you punish the recipients who play by the rules that they were forced to play by. huckabee s chances are seen as slimmer this time around given the array of candidates who have already entered the race. but he could play a spoiler role by taking christian votes away from other gop candidates. a new poll from the important caucus state of iowa has now shifted in recent weeks. what are your thoughts? according to the new university poll released just on may 6th, wisconsin governor scott walker has a big early lead in the iowa republican caucus but not as big as he had at one time. rand paul marco rubio, ted cruz and mike huckabee are now jockeying for second place with numbers between 13% and 11%. jeb bush with 5%. feels like it s heating up. still more people getting in. you re right, it s early.
this race. does he not? four years ago when you have that primary that brady run, that was a seven-man field, too. it s a much more condensed field. frankly it s really only among brady, dillard and rauner because dan rutherford has had issues involving controversy with a former employee in the state treasury s office that has really diminished him here. he can provide a spoiler role because he does retain popularity in central illinois. truly when you look at the number of voters who cast votes in the republican primary here, you re talking about a small number. truly, shifts can make a big difference. carol, when i think about rauner, i tell you, it seems as if, in particular, republicans, right? we ve got another daly diction, self funders have not had a good track record in
