Court temporarily stays issuing of construction permit for Mokrice project

February, 2021 Ljubljana – The Administrative Court has temporarily stayed the issuing of construction permit for the Mokrice hydro plant on the Sava river, the NGO Slovenian Native Fish Association (DPRS) said on Tuesday. The power producer HESS, which is to operate the plant, told the STA the procedure could continue as only the issuing of the permit had been suspended. According to the DPRS, the court decided last Tuesday that the construction permit for the Mokrice project cannot be issued until its decision on whether the public interest of producing energy from renewable sources prevails over the public interest of nature conservation becomes final.

Energy group GEN trumped 2020 plans with EUR 65m in net profit

January, 2021 Krško – Power utility group GEN, which manages the Slovenian half of the Krško power plant, exceeded its plans last year despite the challenging situation and delayed investments due to the Covid-19 epidemic. There were also no disturbances in electricity supply. Net profit reached EUR 65 million, CEO Martin Novšak told the press on Thursday. The group’s revenue topped EUR 2.3 billion, and companies from the group carried out EUR 100 million in investment. “We had very ambitious plans for last year, the highest so far, and at the group level we exceeded them by about 20%,” said Novšak.

Minister says hydrogen use for energy storage will be a priority

December, 2020 Ljubljana – Speaking at an online conference Energy Innovation ’20 hosted by company Prosperia, Environment Minister Andrej Vizjak said on Wednesday that a period of change and innovation in hydrogen technologies, batteries and many other sectors was just beginning. He said a priority would be the use of hydrogen for energy storage. In this context he pointed to a consortium of Slovenian energy companies – Hidroelektrarne na Spodnji Savi (HESS), Geoplin Plinovodi, ELES and Holding Slovenske Elektrarne (HSE) – which is exploring the option of using hydrogen technologies to optimise the energy sector. “This is an area that has been developing for 20 years. We have a lot of know-how,” he said.
