so what you just watched for the last 55 minutes was to a degree the sausage getting made. at the same time, nobody in that room forgot they were making sausage in front of tv cameras. that doesn t typically happen so it wasn t truly a closed door meeting. that said, it was clearly i think to any political reporting fascinating to watch the die namics, dynamics, to look at the interactions. this is not where the ultimate finalities of the deal get hammered out. you would need leadership there for that. obviously kevin mccarthy was there. you would imagine paul ryan, nancy pelosi and others. there were some really interesting moments. i know we re going to get into the substance of the policy in a second. which is critical because we heard some things from this president you d not heard before. you heard on one of them in the tee up to this. for example, there was a moment, it was about is it minutes ago, when dianne feinstein was talking about wanting something on daca now.
point would be bob goodlate who has done a bill and i understand you re ready to submit it and you re going to take that and you ll submit and they ll negotiate in congress and the house. and then it goes to the senate. they ll negotiate. both republican and democrat. it could be a good way of starting. if anyone has an idea different from that. i thing starting in the house. i think starting in the house might be good. you re ready. i think you re ready to go. we are. i would like to add the words merit into any bill that s submitted because i think we should have merit-based immigration like they have in canada, like they have in australia. so we have people coming in that have a great track record as opposed to as opposed to what we re doing now, to be honest with you. but i think merit-based should be absolutely added to any bill, even if it has to do with daca, that would be added to things we said. that would be popular. i can tell you the american public very much wants
we should remind listeners and viewers that this is a president who insisted it would be mexico that would pay for the wall. but, two thoughts here, your general take aways from what we just saw and do you get the sense that the president is still as committed to this wall as he was during the course of the campaign? i think he is absolutely going to continue insisting on the wall. we have seen the price tag go up. he has talked about 18 billion. that s absolutely going to be that was signature campaign promise. i think he will keep going on that. my big take away from this and you guys are absolutely right, that was fascinating to watch and interesting to see that go back and forth. at the end of it you have president trump saying i will agree to whatever you guys say. i was watching it through the lens of somebody tracking immigration for years now and what i saw was the democrats saying i need a clean daca bill.
any moment. the president is due to sign an executive order on veterans. we may see even more of him. we ll be bringing you more on that. i ll let you go to garrett because i do want to talk a little bit about the actual policy pieces that the president put into play here. garrett, what are they saying on the hill, specifically with regards to the president s suggested approach to how all of this gets done? well, i think democrats walk away from this meeting feeling very good. the president absolutely wants to get a deal done on daca. and you hear him talking about the idea of maybe splitting some of this up. that there s the dream act part. there s the border security part. there s the comprehensive immigration reform part. that s, as you pointed out, a little bit ago, that s sort of an electrified phrase up here, it s been tried and failed so many times in the past. there s an argument to be made it would take a conservative president with a conservative base to really get that t
certainly start comprehensive immigration reform. the following afternoon, okay. we ll take an hour off. and then we ll start. i do believe that. because once we get daca done, if it s done properly, with, you know, security and everything else, if it s done properly, we have taken a big chunk of comprehensive out of the negotiation. and i don t think it s going to be that complicated. mr. president. yes. we have to be very clear though. go ahead. in my opinion, we ll be right back here either five years, 30 year, whatever. the chain migration is so insidious. it is the fundamental flaw. if any conversation about daca is being held without that consideration, i agree with border security as well, but any conversation about that is not going to go anywhere in the united states senate. if we think we re going to divide one side versus the other, that s just not going to happen on this. i think chain migration has taken a very big hit over the last six months. people are seein
