Lockdown has given many of us time to revive neglected interests, or to confront chores that we have put off for years. Three or four years ago, my record deck died. It was distressing, because we were old friends. I had bought it in about 1982 with a preposterous proportion of my then-wealth, since nothing could be too good for my record collection: and music was then, as now, my most important recreation. But within a few years, the compact disc player arrived. I acquired one, in 1986, for an even more preposterous proportion of my then-wealth. They were awesomely expensive when first produced – I paid the best part of £700 – but to its credit, I still have it, and it works perfectly after all these years.
