oil per day. the coast guard says it will likely go to 53,000 barrels of oil by the end of the month and sometime in july they hope to change over to another mechanism to capture between 60,000 and 80,000 barrels of oil per day. they hope to get about 90% of the oil that s coming out of that well. the other good news is the relief well is now about 11,000 feet below the floor of the gulf of mexico. it still has another 2,000 feet to go and then it will carefully enter the well bore of the broken well and then pump thousands of pounds of mud and cement into that well and that spill cam that we ve been watching will finally slowly come to a stop. lynne? that s what we re all waiting for. i also want to ask you about this new development with admiral thad allen saying, okay, we re capturing now 1 million gallons of oil each day, yet every day we continue to see that picture that you re looking at right there on the bottom of your skreechb that shows the gushing well, we see the birds co
of this cleanup response. so it s very unclear when this change will happen. but for those on the oily beaches and in the oily marshes, aren t care, they just want that oil to be cleaned up now. what s the latest on the containment? as tough as it was for tony hayward in washington, the engineers for bp had a much better week, the containment level is up to about 25,000 barrels of oil a day. that s about 10,000 more than it was at the start of the week, and there s good news about the relief well that s being drilled. it s now within 200 feet of the well bore, but it still must go down deeper, another 2,000 feet. then it will slowly, delicately make a turn and approach the well bore, and once that happens, they will pump mud and then cement into the well and that spill cam that we have been watching for more than a month
used to gather oil and then intentionally ignite it. 2,000 and 2,500 barrels of oil. another image taken below the water to widen the angle from the spill cam only viewable for a short time this afternoon. it really shows the magnitude of the oil flow. it s the widest shot we ve frankly seen. questions about the oil spill containment and cleanup were fired at ceo tony hayward today on capitol hill with the congressman. there was relentless grilling laced with anger and frustration. bart stupak closed the hearing with this blistering comment. i think the evasiveness of your answers only serve to increase the frustration, not decrease the frustration. not just of members of congress, but of that of the american people. we want to show you how the day kind of unfolded. senior congressional correspondent dana bash reports.
beginning i have not believed bp. i have not believed their numbers. that s why i forced them to put up the spill cam so that experts could analyze this flow rate. i think that the number could even go higher. i think that we are in a worst case scenario. i think bp was trying to limit their liability because they pay a fine per barrel of oil that s out there. they were lying or grossly incompetent. and i think that the livability of the gulf is, as a result, been victimized by bp. but these numbers, these are the numbers we should have known in the very beginning. if we had known it was 60,000 barrels per day, it would have changed the number of skimmers, the amount of boom, the amount of protection for the health of the workers, the amount of chemicals that went into the ocean, the amount of compensation that would be needed for the people onshore. all of it would have been different and bp kept it from the government and from the people.
scientists said it could be 70,000, they attacked that guy and said it s inaccurate and it s alarmist. you know right from the beginning i have not believed bp. i have not believed their numbers. i forced them to put up the spill cam so experts could analyze this flow rate. i think that the number could even go higher. i think that we are in a worst case scenario. i think bp was trying to limit their liability because they pay a fine per barrel of oil that s out there. they were lying or grossly incompetent. and i think that the liveability of the gulf is, as a result, been victimized by bp. but these numbers, these are the numbers we should have known in the very beginning. if we had known it was 60,000 barrels per day, it would have changed the number of skimmers, the amount of boom, the amount of protection, the amount of chemicals that went into the ocean, the amount of
