The Spencer Municipal Band, under the baton of Tom Rutt, will be opening the summer music series as part of Spencer’s festivities for Flagfest on Sunday at 2 p.m., at the bandshell in East Leach Park. The band is made up of area musicians and is supported by the city of Spencer and the Spencer Community Schools.
“We are so glad to be a part of Spencer’s Flagfest this year,” co-director Katie Bush said.

City of Spencer celebrating its sesquicentennial in 2021
Spencer’s annual “Flagfest” in June will do double-duty this year as the city celebrates its sesquicentennial.
A new exhibit opening today at the Clay County Heritage Center in Spencer is focused on artifacts to illustrate that 150 year span.
“For example, dresses from kind of few different eras to show how clothing changes throughout this time,” says Braden Falline, director of collections at the museum.
There’s also a recreation of the original 1871 plat map for the City of Spencer.
“They cut out and made little wood houses,” he says. “It’s a nice 3D representation of what Spencer looked like at the time.”

Spencer, IA (KICD)– It may be hard to believe, but Spencer’s Flagfest and Sesquicentennial celebrations are only a little over a month away.
Becky Fear-Hatting from the Spencer Chamber of Commerce tells us the festivities unofficially begin tonight with a fundraiser to help make the other activities possible.
Flagfest and Spencer 150th Celebration will take place June 11-13 starting with an opening ceremony that Friday at five o’clock. A full schedule of event can be found on the Chamber of Commerce website.
