Four fatal plane crashes in two months in Jacksonville area

Four aircraft accidents in Northeast Florida in the past two months have one thing in common  all were fatal to the pilots and passengers on board, leaving a total of eight dead. Two of them involved an instructor and passenger, one of those a young student pilot from Fernandina Beach, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The board s new preliminary report for the latter June 18 crash in the St. Marys River indicates that the Cessna 150L s engine was still on when it hit the water shortly after 11 a.m. But there is still no information of what caused instructor David William Cuttino and 18-year-old student pilot Alexis George to crash after taking off from nearby Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport, according to the report.

77-year-old pilot identified as one of Middleburg plane crash victims

A 77-year-old Middleburg man has been identified as one of the victims of Wednesday s plane crash in the woods off Violet Way that also killed a man and woman, according to news partner First Coast News. The official Federal Aviation Administration tail number registry also lists the same man, Carl J. Powell, as the co-owner of the 1978 Beech C23 that crashed just after a 9 a.m. takeoff from a private airfield near Carter Spencer Road. Powell was a veteran pilot with 20 years of experience. The family said one of Powell s friends, Jeff Thomas, and an unidentified woman were also victims, according to First Coast News. Powell called the aircraft Miss Anne.

Multiple people dead after single plane crash in northern Florida

A single-engine aircraft crashed shortly after departure in a wooded area near Spencer s Airpark in Middleburg, Fla., around 9 a.m. local time today, the agency said in a statement, adding that the National Transportation Safety Board will head the investigation. The tail number of the aircraft will be released by the FAA after investigators verify it at the crash site. The agency did not identify those involved in the accident. Middleburg is located less than 30 miles southwest of downtown Jacksonville.
