David Wilshire, who has died aged 80, was a Conservative MP on the libertarian Right of the party who represented the Surrey constituency of Spelthorne from 1987 to 2010. He took over from Humphrey Atkins, Margaret Thatcher’s first Northern Ireland Secretary, and handed the seat on to Kwasi Kwarteng, who would be Liz Truss’s short-lived Chancellor.
