clearly it s going poorly. he s made the calculation that however risky it is for him to call up veterans, to call up reserves, it s less risky than to let the war play out. it s less risky for him domestically at home for his position to escalate even then than it is to lose it. now look t will get interesting. we ll have to see how russian society reacts. whether propaganda, whether this absurd narrative about why they are fighting this war, whether it works at home or putin has to resort to imprisonment and intimidation to get russians to join up. so i simply say watch this space. he never wanted to take the step. he never wanted to get to this point. but there you have it. so obviously, these steps by putin will become central to what we ll hear from president biden later today. he s going to be addressing the united nations general assembly.
