Wampanoag lament changes, recall ancestors fishing for food in winter

Carrying his fishing rod and gear, Dan Hannigan recently walked to Spectacle Pond in Wareham, where he chiseled a hole in the ice with a hatchet to drop a lure into the water. With the relatively warm weather this season, the ice is thin, less than the 4 inches needed to walk on it. Standing by the side of the pond, he set a trap with a spring mechanism. When a fish bites, a flag will rise to alert him. And so he waited. Hannigan, a member of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe, is among several Wampanoag people in the area who fish year-round in Wareham, on Cape Cod and in Plymouth to keep their cultural practices alive, even though the practice has been forced to change over the years.

Massachusetts Fishing Report – January 14, 2021

Massachusetts Fishing Report – January 14, 2021 Hilltown Ponds are hot! While the wait is on for winter to start behaving like it close to the coast, those seeking safe ice have been on the move. Should you decide that you simply can’t wait for neighborhood water bodies to cap over, point your ride to the valleys and the hills! Massachusetts Fishing Report I was pleasantly surprised when David of Merrimack Sports spilled the beans on a number of ice fishing options in the Merrimack Valley. First on the list was Millvale Pond which was producing good numbers of rainbows, bass and pickerel but the number which most stuck out was 7”, which was the average depth of ice! Other spots that have been producing are Plugs Pond, Rock Pond, Country Pond and Tuxbury Pond. In anticipation of what seems like an imminent lock-up of the coves of the Merrimack (again!), the shop is supplementing its “heavy” shiners (5”) with bigger bait for the pike that prowl there.

Massachusetts Fishing Report – January 7, 2021

Massachusetts Fishing Report – January 7, 2021 The ice fishing game is on out west and the bass bite is good! It’s often been said that ones perception is one’s reality and if you’re sticking close to the coast hoping for hardwater than you’re missing out on opportunities elsewhere. Talk of 15 pound pike and Hilltown trout abound out west and finally there are even solid reports of solid ice north of the border! Massachusetts Fishing Report Pete from Belsan Bait and Tackle in Scituate said that he is occasionally getting customers who are picking up some clams and surf casting towards the horizon, as well as hopefully a wayward cod, off South Shore beaches. Two which have produced in the distant past were Rexhame and Duxbury. For a more dependable outing, try soaking a shiner among the cranberry bogs of Norwell. Of course it is January and for those who prefer their winters with ice underfoot some are picking up a flat of herring and heading out to western pike spots
