Native veterans support Deb Haaland ahead of historic vote

Native veterans support Deb Haaland ahead of historic vote Monday, March 15, 2021 WASHINGTON, D.C. Native veterans and allies are stepping up to support Rep. Deb Haaland (D-New Mexico) ahead of her final historic vote as Secretary of the Interior. Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, comes from a military family. Her mother served in the U.S. Navy and her father was in the U.S. Marine Corps, a history she shared at her confirmation hearing last month. “My mother is a Navy veteran, was a civil servant at the Bureau of Indian Education for 25 years, and she raised four kids as a military wife,” Haaland told the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources during her opening statement on February 23.

Senate sets initial vote on Deb Haaland to be Secretary of the Interior

Senate sets initial vote on Deb Haaland to be Secretary of the Interior Thursday, March 11, 2021 UPDATE: The U.S. Senate voted 54 to 42 to end debate on Deb Haaland’s nomination to be Secretary of the Interior. Four Republicans joined all 50 Democrats in voting to advance the nomination. A final vote is still expected on Monday. The vote is of a procedural nature, on what is known as motion to invoke cloture on the nomination. Schumer filed the motion earlier this week in order to clear Republican objections to Haaland, who is a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna. “Despite Republican obstruction, Representative Haaland will be confirmed by the Senate to be Secretary Haaland,” Schumer said on Tuesday before submitting the motion.
