yesterday voting to sue disney. let s go back to sort of how we got here because it s really interesting. desantis signed thisis signed t law. disney responded with a rather short statement just saying, we oppose this. we re going to work with lawmakers and opponents to overturn it. that s when desantis decided to target disney s special taxing district. this was a district that was created more than half a century ago when central florida was just swampland and disney bought it and said we want to build a theme park here. the state said, sure. there s nothing here. here is a government will create so you can control and build all the infrastructure needed to make your theme parks operate. for most of the last half century, that agreement has stood and allowed disney to grow into this booming and tourist attraction in the state to become tourism leader. but desantis decided to put his own people in charge of that board as retaliation for disney speaking out.
federal court. but this new lawsuit aims to invalidate disney s last-minute deal that it made with this outgoing board which was overseeing this special taxing district for walt disney. the lawsuit claims, quote, in an effort to stymie florida s elected representatives, disney covertly cobbled together a series of 11 hour deals, when it is soon to be replaced puppet government. that s a direct quote. disney had said that it did everything right to maintain control of its special taxing district, and published two meeting notices in the orlando sentinel, letting people know what it was planning to do, and that they could come and weigh in at those public meetings. disney says that this whole thing is really just an effort to punish the company, john, for speaking its mind. and remind people about that, which is sort of the crux of the argument of disney s lawsuit. yes, absolutely, disney filed its lawsuit just minutes after the new board, appointed by the governor, that special boar
settles. yeah, michael, a month ago, the republicans in tallahassee were giving disney whatever he wanted. and the democrats were criticizing it. now, it s flipped entirely. the republicans are punishing disney. and the democrats are praising it. so, no one knows for sure. disney pays about 60 million a year in county taxes. and they also pay another 150 million or so to support reedy creek. so, that s over $200 million they are paying now. it could be that disney saves money. it could be that disney loses money. no one knows until it happens. the best guess, i think, is that the county, as they have done for others, will set up a special taxing district. and give disney back many of the powers it has. it s amazing to me how people suit up in their partisan
