To the surprise of no one, a legislative panel vetting candidates for state treasurer has voted to recommend House Economic Matters Chair Dereck E. Davis (D-Prince George’s) for the job.
The treasurer of Maryland “is the principal custodian of the State's cash deposits, monies from bond sales, and other securities and collateral and directs the investments of those assets,” according to a state website.
While there are disagreements over which state owns the title of most gerrymandered, Maryland’s 2011 map went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, where justices said partisan gerrymandering is not an issue for the federal courts.
The Special Joint Legislative Committee to Select the State Treasurer voted 10-0 for Del. Dereck Davis, a Prince George’s County Democrat who has been the House Economic Matters chairman.
