overthrow the 2020 election culminated in a violent mob storming the u.s. capitol. for a few weeks, trump was an outcast. a political comeback seemed farfetched, almost impossible to imagine. and yet, thanks to his allies in congress and the maga movement on hold, donald trump has emerged here at the end of 2023 not nearly rehabilitated politician but as the undisputed leader of his party. now, trump began this year as the prohibitive favorite for the republican presidential nomination. even in january, he had a monster 20 point national lead over his closest rival, florida governor ron desantis. and in the months since, trump s lead has only widened. at this point, a rematch against joe biden appears almost inevitable. and yet, while trump s march towards the republican nomination this year was mostly interrupted, there has been for the last 12 months an x-factor that he has had to contend with, a series of criminal investigations. as the year began, trump was the subject of
at stake. the republicans have only a three seat majority in the house of representatives. the democrats have only a one seat majority in the united states senate, with democratic senators facing difficult campaigns in ohio, michigan, and nevada. democrats will be running on a 3.7% unemployment rate. unemployment has not been, has been below 4% for 22 months. that s the longest stretch since 1969. president biden was at an infrastructure event at the carpenters international training center in the battleground state of nevada on the day the final jobs report for 2023 was released. folks, all this project stands in stark contrast to my predecessor. it was talked about infrastructure week. [laughter] for years infrastructure week. but it failed. he failed. on my watch instead of infrastructure week america is having infrastructure decade. have now disqualified donald trump from appearing on primary election ballots. these decisions are based on an interpretation of the 14th amendment, and trump s actions during and after the 2020 election. but late thursday, california s secretary of state, decided the former president should appear on that states primary ballot. all this sets up an explosive legal and political drama that will inevitably end up before the justices of the nation s highest court. nbc s ryan nobles has more. for the second time in two weeks, a state has ruled that donald trump is ineligible to run for president of the united states. it was not a close call on the question of whether january 6th, 2021, was an insurrection. the events of january 6th 2021 were impressive dented and tragic. reporter: shenna bellows, the secretary of state in maine, a democrat, determined that trump s actions on january 6th constitute a violation of the 14th amendment. the weight of the evidence makes clear tha
