we re also joined by former u.s. navy s.e.a.l. chris heven. first barbara for the direct reporting, this is unprecedented video, to be able to see these guys in action. they are some of the most secretive, dare say, in the world. what have we learned about their operation from what we can see in this video? well, here s a big clue, ashleigh. the pentagon won t say who they are, but will say they were special operations forces. in pentagon-speak, that means s.e.a.l. team 6, army delta force, one of these most elite special forces units. they do not like to be seen on camera, that s for sure. they do not like their faces to be shown. all of them of course somewhat disguised. ball caps, beards, scarves over their faces, sunglasses. they knew, clearly, this might, one, be videotaped. they certainly didn t want their faces shown to the taliban. they move very quickly. they know what they re going to do. this choreography has been worked out in advance. i think it s very interesting.
that it s still raining outside. people are still coming. this stadium as we ve been telling our viewers all morning long has a capacity of 90,000-plus. you took a close look at the security preparations. what was your takeaway? south africa has on the one hand experience dealing with this because of the 2010 world cup and other events they ve hosted, although organizers were telling us they were actually anticipating two times the number of people that they would need to move compared to the world cup. so in terms of transportation, they were supposed to be running buses. in terms of security, this is the single largest event this country has ever had to secure because of all the dignitaries that are here and, of course, because of all of the people. so they were telling us they ve deployed thousands of military, police and we were on site here yesterday. we came across one of the special forces units that normally run undercover secret
we are here on october 5th. yesterday, october 4th was the 20 year anniversary of the black hawk down incident. the battle when so many u.s. forces lost their lives. that became a very significant shadow on the u.s. military for so many years. i think the other issue to contemplate is why is this so important to americans? why are we talking about this in such detail tonight? it is the growth of al qaeda networks. these al qaeda networks from libya to syria across north africa through the horn in places where there are not strong governments. al qaeda movements are on the rise. growing ability to attack western targets if not to launch attacks outside of africa and into europe or america, potentially. this is why it is so significant. this is why the u.s. and other intelligence services and special forces units continue to go after the al qaeda targets.
