PAUL WHITE who has died at the age of 77, was a widely travelled British journalist, translator and former miner, who spent the last 36 years of his life in Beijing.
For many years, he wrote the China Diary column for this newspaper. Morning Star editor Ben Chacko said: “His China Diary was unique a brisk and breezy overview of Chinese events that provided a window into the country. We’ll miss it.”
A hard worker and keen socialist, Paul had a passion for studying languages and he learnt several, including Mandarin, Korean and Old English. He enjoyed folk singing, rambling and the Japanese martial art of Aikido, in which he achieved a black belt in 2011 at the age of 68.

Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan receives Special Book Award of China for translation of Xi Jinping s book
AKIPRESS.COM - Ambassador of Kyrgyzstan Baktygul Kalambekova was awarded the Special Book Award of China at the 14th awarding ceremony on December 18 in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing for her contribution into development and promotion of bilateral cultural ties, as well as for translation of the book on public administration by Chinese President Xi Jinping into Kyrgyz language.

BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) Fifteen foreign writers, translators and publishers were awarded the Special Book Award of China on Friday for their contributions to introducing Chinese culture to the world.
Among the winners is Swedish sinologist Lennart Lundberg, who has been devoted to Chinese literature translation for over 50 years.
William Nienhauser, a translator from the United States, also received the award. He is dedicated to the translation of classical Chinese literature and the promotion of cultural exchanges between China and other countries.
The winners from 15 countries watched the award ceremony online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
