Certainly could not be prepared for the level of poverty and what i saw in the townships throughout the city. We opened 2 stores and lines were out the door in anticipation of starbucks coming to the market. Before we opened the stores i , gathered the 50 young people who would grace the green apron and represent the company. I sat with them for a few hours and wanted to hear each one of , their personal stories. Largest number of chronically Homeless People. Skidrow is the epicenter of homelessness in los angeles. Tell us about that. Skid is this 54 block in the middle of downtown los angeles, and is surrounded lofts,rise and luxury towers,ours bank chinatown, then you have this little spot right in the middle or it is a compact, dense area of 10,000 people. A lot of my experience with , itlessness and the crowd completelyute different place from anywhere else i could imagine. People different names. Some people the devils den, some people call it this is where people go to die. Host in l. A. , homelessness is like the weather. Not worth talking about almost there is a crisis. It was like by this, local residents and officials are paying attention. L. A. County spent almost 1 billion a year simply managing homelessness despite that, more and more people are living on the street. A couple years ago, the city embarked on a plan to curb homelessness. Has it worked . Sophia lee we are still trying
Mr. Brzezinski my book argues we havent really exploited that opportunity very well. Brian what is that opportunity . Mr. Brzezinski we havent led very well. The opportunity is to really shape a world which is more congenial to our values, more in keeping with our interests, more responsive to fundamental human aspirations. Brian lets go over your own personal background for a moment so people that see you all the time and dont know where you came from. Born in poland, major way eventually to canada. How did that happen . Mr. Brzezinski not entirely on my own. I was a small kid. My father was a diplomat. We came to america. I have been thinking about that lately because we came by boat in those days. We arrived first in new york. A family of diplomats, so it was a nice, comfortable trip. Of the first thing i saw them was the statue of liberty. That this being told is the symbol of america. I cannot help but think often these days that for so many people around the world, the symbol of
