Originally a cooperative, the mill was privatised in 2010 the Central agency is questioning this move, alleging that there were irregularities in the transaction by the new owner, which it says is linked to senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar.
While Ajit Pawar’s role in the bank and in some of the companies that bought the sugar cooperatives which had taken loans from the bank was mentioned extensively in the chargesheet filed by the ED earlier this month, the leader has not been named an accused in the case so far.
The ED’s probe was initiated on the basis of a First Information Report, dated August 26, 2019, registered by Mumbai Police’s Economic Offence Wing (EOW) under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including criminal conspiracy and cheating and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
