GMC Hummer EV Will Go Racing In The Extreme E Series. Sort Of ++ This is quite cool, but we don’t expect the racing version to be too mechanically similar to the one that you can buy.
If by reading the headline you thought you were actually going to see a modified, off-road racing version of the series GMCHummer EV, well, we have to disappoint you. That’s not exactly what’s going to happen because GM will finance Chip Ganassi Racing which in turn will create an Extreme E racer that loosely looks like the production electric Hummer.
In fact, it won’t be mechanically related to the Hummer EV at all. Instead, it will actually be the Spark Odyssey 21, a purpose-built off-road vehicle base specifically designed for Extreme E. It has 536 horsepower and it was developed using technology developed for the Formula E electric circuit racing series.

The FIA-sanctioned series is actually a one-make championship, meaning, much like NASCAR, every car is identical under the skin.
However, the USA-based Chip Ganassi Racing Team will run its cars with Hummer EV-themed graphics and bodywork, as part of a new promotional deal with GMC.
“I can’t think of a better fit than showcasing the look of GMC’s Hummer EV in Extreme E with Chip Ganassi Racing,” said General Motors Vice President of Performance and Motorsports, Jim Campbell.
“Both GMC Hummer EV and the Extreme E series are designed to be revolutionary – to challenge perceptions of electric vehicles and to showcase their true capability,” he added.

Extreme E regulations include a common chassis for teams to use, called the Spark Odyssey 21, and the battery comes from Williams Advanced Engineering. Chip Ganassi and GM already have some experience together in IMSA with the Cadillac DPi. This appears to be the team’s first foray into electric racing.
“It’s truly an honor to represent GMC, especially during such an exciting time in auto racing,” said Chip Ganassi, CGR team owner. “The new GMC HUMMER EV is going to be a game changer in terms of how the world views off-road EV capability, and we couldn’t be more proud to represent GMC in such an innovative new series.”
