washington. this is very serious. they re not telling us where these jets were scrambled from but you know it is serious when they scramble two aircraft to bring in a civilian passenger jet. reporter: yeah. the two f-15s for scrambled about 40 minutes before this plane landed in bangor. there are a couple nearby bases that could do that, but norad confirmed they did use two f-15s to accompany this plane, which is a boeing 767. us airways flight 787 onto the ground in bangor, maine. buses look like they could be there for deplaining those 179 passengers. y you mentioned the tsa did say they had reports of a passenger exhibiting suspicious behavior on the flight. out of an abundance of caution, it was diverted. we know from local law enforcement that the fbi is the lead agency on this issue right now. we still don t know what happened on board the plane. there are a couple obviously different scenarios. i should point out if this is interfering with the flight crew, that is a
affordable, dave and when is this going to begin? for space tourists, it will be a long time before it s truly affordable for middle class folks like me to afford to go. i m not sure that would be a good use of my money. i d rather donate a big chunk of poen if i suddenly became rich to perhaps a cancer cause or something like that. but for folks who are really interested in this, maybe we ll get there. i think more importantly, it will tend to drive down the cost of space transportation so that we can do science, so that we can do industry in space, so that we can go to some of the exciting places that the space program should be going to instead of going around and around and around in low earth orb bit. so we can fulfill our commitments to our international partners on space station. thanks, david, for looking ahead with us. sarah palin looks ahead to the midterms. does she have her eye on a run? what some will do to get in the record books.
orbiting overhead. by buying the services of space transportation, rather than the vehicles, themselves, we can continue to ensure rigorous safety standards are met, but we will also accelerate the pace of innovations as companies from young startups to established leaders, compete to design and build and launch new means of carrying people and materials out of our atmosphere. in addition, as part of this effort, we will build on the good work already done on the orion crew capsule. i directed charlie bolden to immediately begin developing a rescue vehicle using this technology so we are not forced to rely on foreign providers if it becomes necessary to quickly bring our people home from the international space station. and this orion effort will be part of the technological foundation for advanced spacecraft to be used in future deep space missions. in fact, orion will be readied
testing and improving our capabilities in space. this includes technology like more efficient life support systems that reduce the cost of future missions. and in order to reach the space station, we will work with a growing array of private companies competing to make get to go space easier and more affordable. [ applause ] i recognize some have said its unfeasible or unwise to work with the private sector in this way. i disagree. the truth is, nasa has always relied on private industry to help design and build the vehicles that carry astronauts to space from the mercury capsule that carried john glenn nearly 50 years ago to the space shuttle discovery currently overhead. by buying the services of space transportation, rather than the vehicles themself, we can
the atlantic ocean. i m sure there s one in the pacific, too. we begin with president obama s call, however, for the most significant change in u.s. space policy since nasa was created some 50 years ago at cape canaveral today, the president urged congress to approve a plan to shift some responsibility for sending u.s. astronauts into space from nasa to private companies. by buying the services of space transportation, rather than the vehicles themselves, we will also ak sccelerate the pacf innovation, as companies compete to design and build and launch new means of carrying people and materials out of our atmosphere. under the plan, $6 billion would be added to nasa s budget. the constellation program to the moon would be scrapped and private companies would charter flights to the international space station. the plan has been opposed bay number of former astronauts, including neil armstrong. here to mix it up on our panel,
