Movie Review: Space Sweepers Is Action Sci-Fi, South Korean-Style

This movie has been touted as the first blockbuster space film to come out of South Korea. The new movie Space Sweepers, which debuted on Netflix earlier this week and spent some time Monday and Tuesday on its Top Ten-most-watched list, has been touted as the first blockbuster space film to come out of South Korea. After another South Korean film, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, won the Best Picture Oscar last year, Space Sweepers, while very different from Bong’s scabrous satire, is another film from that country that’s proving to find a large audience in the United States. The pandemic has also led to a dearth of action blockbuster movies being released, as most of 2020’s summer movie lineup was pushed back to later this year, so there’s a good chance the film is connected with audiences starved for that sort of story.

Space Sweepers Director: Jo Sung-hee Space Sweepers Ratings: 3 stars For years now, South Korean movies have been associated with gore horror, unbelievable fantasies, picturesque periods and weak in the knee romance in my head. Space sci-fi movies are a thing of Hollywood. From Interstellar to The Martian and 2019 s Ad Astra are a few great examples of well-made sci-fi movies. However, when director Jo Sung-hee announced he was bringing forward a space sci-fi, Space Sweepers, it immediately caught my attention. South Korea s first sci-fi stars Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu, Yoo Hae-jin and Richard Armitage.  Song Joong-ki plays the pilot Tae-ho of Victory spaceship while Kim Tae-ri takes the lead as Captain Jang. The talented Jin Seon-kyu essays the role of Tiger Park whereas Yoo Hae-jin doubles up as the humanoid robot Bubs. Armitage plays the evil James Sullivan in the movie. As the trailers have already revealed, Space Sweepers is set in the future. Artificial spaces
